Cedar Shingles
What are cedar shingles?
Cedar shingles are wooden tiles that can be used for cladding roofs and walls of buildings, whether you are cladding the roof of a domestic home or a garden gazebo, there is a grade of cedar shingle to suit your needs.
What are Cedar Shingles made from?
Cedar Shingles are manufactured from Western Red Cedar, which is imported from sustainable forests in Canada. Western Red Cedar grows relatively slowly which means it has very close growth rings which results in a naturally very durable product, so durable in fact that stainless steel nails should be used as Cedar Shingles will outlast a regular galvanised nail. When Cedar Shingles are installed correctly they will provide a long lasting weather proof and insulating roof.
What can I use Cedar Shingles for?
Cedar Shingles have many possible applications, popular uses include on: buildings such as churches, schools, community centres, domestic homes, garages, summer houses, gazebos, etc. with little or no maintenance. Cedar Shingles have a very warm and natural look, the colour will weather from a rich red/ brown to silver/ grey, after about a year of exposure to the elements.
Which grade do I need?
Cedar Shingles undergo strict grading rules and rigid inspection programmes to ensure that the correct specification of timber is being used for each application. The grade of the shingle is determined by how knotty it is and how much sap wood is present.
The grades are as follows:
Grade 1 - Blue Label
This is the premium grade for Cedar Shingles. These top-grade shingles are 100% heart wood, 100% knot free and 100% edge grain.
Grade 2 - Red Label
A good grade for many applications. Not less than 11" clear of knots on 18" shingles. Flat grain and limited sap wood are permitted.
Grade 3 - Black Label
A basic grade for economy applications and secondary buildings. Not less than 6" clear of knots on 18" shingles.
Grade 4 - Green Label
A utility grade for under coursing of side walls, not to be used for roofing.

How many Cedar Shingles will I need?
Cedar Shingles are sold in packs that cover approximately 2.5 square metres. The width of the individual shingles vary ranging from 100mm - 320mm, this ensures that all joints will be in different places and no gaps will be left uncovered for weather to penetrate. Nb. the pack coverage will vary depending on the pitch of the application. E.g. you don't need as much overlap on on a vertical wall as you would on a pitched roof.
